When I first visited the Teusner boys just at the end of the 2007 harvest they had Shiraz and Grenache bubbling away in just about every available container! It has been a really hard vintage with everything coming ripe at the same time following a horrendous heat spike with ten consecutive days over 45 degrees, however Kym and Michael were cool calm and collected, even if they were running on their last reserves of energy!
Kym Teusner came to wine after working in a number of hotels and conference centers both in Australia and the USA. He studied oenology at Roseworthy followed by stints at Torbreck and Veritas before setting up Teusner. Teusner Wines was born when Kym and his viticulturalist brother-in-law Michael Page bought the fruit from a condemned 75 year old bush vine Grenache vineyard, allowing the vineyard to see another year. Using some other small parcels of fruit from the Barossa, the Teusner label was launched with the 2002 Joshua of which only one hundred and sixty-five cases were produced with the Avatar launched a year later after spending time in barrel.
Kym is an incredibly talented winemaker and they are without doubt destined for further great things, but above all they are top guys doing what they love most and having plenty of fun along the way! Not many wineries can boast purpose built stubby holders on each fermentor for late night pump overs!
These are the wines, vintages and approximate retail prices from Teusner we currently have available in the UK:

Joshua 2007, Unoaked Grenache/Mataro/Shiraz * 90/100 Parker * 94/100 Halliday "Good colour; a luscious array of raspberry fruit, wild herbs and spice on the bouquet; the palate is warm and rich, but shows clear definition of dark fruit for structure; long and a little savoury on the finish, with a generous splash of red fruit to conclude. Astral Series FG Riebke Shiraz 2006 *92/100 RP "The 2006 Astral Series FG Shiraz is a glass-coating opaque purple. It offers up an alluring aromatic array of violets, Asian spices, smoked meat, plum, blueberry, and licorice. Dense and layered on the palate, it has plenty of spicy, ripe fruit, ample fine grained tannins, and several years of aging potential. If you can get past the price, drink this flavorful effort between 2012 and 2021". | Bottle | £76.00 | Find Stockists |

Astral Series Moppa Mataro 2006 This comes in a big black monolith of a bottle which reminds me of the obelisk in Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey". Rather fitting as we decided that if we manage to procure another bottle we'd leave it for 20 years and then open it whilst dressed in monkey suits, making chimp noises and throwing bones in the air. It's that fucking good. Earthen, primal, brooding and spicy with dark cherries & plums, nutmeg, chocolate and even some blueberries. A well judged sweetish oak encasing brushes up nicely against the wine's more savoury characters. But this is really all about the quality of the Mataro fruit and the faultless structure Kym Teusner has given it. It's inspiring. One could dwell on it for centuries whilst evolving into a more and more complex being. Yep, just like Kubrick's movie only the bottle didn't last as long.
