Buckshot, Heathcote, Victoria
Rob Peebles started making wine in 1993, working with the legendary Mick Morris in Rutherglen, and joined Domaine Chandon in 1997. In 1999 Rob secured the fruit from a 60 year old Shiraz block (the oldest in Heathcote), dry grown and cropped between 1 and 2 tons to the acre. In 2001 they added the fruit from a younger vineyard and the Buckshot Shiraz was released. Total production is 400 cases.
Although we are out of stock there might be some vintages still available from the stockists while we will be shipping the 2008 during the summer – keep an eye on our news letters for the exact arrival date!
These are the wines, vintages and approximate retail prices from Buckshot we currently have available in the UK:

Meet the winemakers
Rob Peebles...
- What was your first Job?
- Not that exciting; working at the local recreational centre on basketball nights. I did however work in a London wine bar at one stage – which proved to be far more interesting.
- What has been your greatest wine and food experience?
- Drinking a bottle of Chianti Classico with Meegan (we are now married) with some bread and cheese we’d bought at the local stores in Verona overlooking our hostel on a very light night 20 years ago
- If you could make a vintage anywhere, where would you go?
- Chateau d’Yquem – Sauternes is something very foreign to me, but I’m loving some of these wines at the moment. I’d have to learn French, which would be difficult given I struggle enough with English!
- Your proudest moment?
- When my 2 girls were born. On a wine front, we enjoy receiving people’s comments on our wines. This is a hobby for us – we make Buckshot for people to enjoy.
- What would your last meal be?
- It would be a very, very long one, starting just after 12 noon and going well into the night ……..after all, none of us are in any hurry ! The more friends the better - The menu - Green Prawns cooked on the barby with a good, dry, young Aussie Riesling from the Eden Valley. (Justin – Radford 2008 Eden Valley Riesling perhaps?) Barramundi (fleshy Australian fish) cooked whole on the grill with asparagus, together with a Margaret River Chardonnay (Justin – Umanu Estate?) Peking Duck – a must have in pancakes with cucumber and spring onion with a succulent Central Otago Pinot (Justin – Chard Farm 2006?) Pork Spare Ribs – Mum’s recipe – my favourite pork dish, with our own Buckshot Square Peg (Zin blend) Rack of Lamb – oven roasted with mash – simple but fantastic, with our Buckshot Shiraz – any vintage Beef Rib Eye on the bone cooked as a whole joint in the webber at low heat for 4hours, with a classic Aussie Cab Shiraz Cheese – three types (all Australian) – Triple cream oozing all over the plate (after all, don’t have to worry about the heart now!) Vintage Cheddar & Tasmanian Blue – something to go with the Vintage Port (Justin – Churchill’s 1991 or Aussie?). Desserts Bread and Butter pudding – with a Sauternes Chocolate soufflé with chocolate pouring sauce – cooked by Meegan (assuming she’s put up with me this far) Bombe Alaska (hazelnut and chocolate ice cream and meringue) – with very old Australian Muscat – maybe some of Mick Morris’ pre-phyloxera stock.
- What is your desert island wine (apart from your own)?
- Hardy’s 1968 Vintage Port (Australian) – my father has cellared this since its release for my 21st birthday – there are still a few bottles left, drinking beautifully!
- What would be your fantasy other job?
- Formula 1 racing driver – I know, predictable, but would be serious fun (assuming I could actually drive at that speed without needing another pair of pants).
- Sport: Round Ball or Oval?
- Are you serious – Aussie rules of course!
- Who, in the whole of history, would you most like to sit next to on a long-haul flight?
- Lance Armstrong – overcoming cancer, winning the Tour de France, retiring, then making a coming back; he continues to amaze. So many questions!
- How would you best like to be remembered?
- A good father and friend, who loved life and those around him.
